A new combination in Peristethium (Loranthaceae) expands the genus' range into the Amazon-Cerrado ecotone Acta Amazonica
Caires,Claudenir Simões; Gomes-Bezerra,Kadja Milena; Proença,Carolyn Elinore Barnes.
The genus Peristethium, characterized by determinate inflorescences protected by deciduous bracts, occurs in the northwest of South America, as well as Costa Rica and Panama. The main objective of this paper was to transfer one species to what we believe is its correct generic placement in Peristethium, that likewise implies in a shift of the genus' distribution beyond the Amazon. A new combination, Peristethium reticulatum, is proposed, based on Struthanthus reticulatus, described from Tocantins in 1980. The sexual dimorphism of the inflorescences of P. reticulatum (sessile male flowers and pedicellate female flowers) associated with male inflorescences that are inserted at leafless nodes are unique within the genus. The male flowers have dimorphic...

Baybean ( Canavalia rosea (Sw.) DC.); organogenesis, morphological and anatomical studies Gayana Botánica
Mohajer,Sadegh; Taha,Rosna Mat; Mohamed,Normadiha; Razak,Ummi Nur Abdul.
ABSTRACT Morphological and anatomical studies comprised leaf venation, histological analysis and epidermal peeling were carried out on Canavalia rosea (Sw.) DC.). Anatomical studies of the leaf and root determined the presence of cuticle and oil glands, arrangement of cells and the structure of vascular system. The dorsiventral leaf with pinnate venation and amphistomatic leaf with paracytic type stomata were embedded below the epidermis. Trichomes and oil glands were also observed on both adaxial and abaxial surfaces of leaf. Longitudinal sections of the callus showed the existence of meristematic cells, which could give rise to plant regeneration. In the process of organogenesis, adventitious shoots emerged from leaf and stem explants within 2 months...

Delimitation of Azadirachta indica A. Juss. from Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae Juss.) based on leaf morphology Phyton
Abdel-Hameed,Usama K.
In Egypt there are two different species that are commercially marketed under the same trade name of Neem: one is Azadirachta indica A. Juss., and the other is Melia azedarach L. In this paper, leaf morphological characters (e.g., lamina architecture, stomatography, petiole and blade micromorphology) of both taxa were described and illustrated to aid in the identification and differentiation between the two misidentifed taxa. The obtained results concluded that leaf morpho-anatomical characters will not only provide criteria for their correct taxonomic authentication, but would also serve as future standard data for the quality assessment of the pharmaceutical preparation of botanical drugs.

Leaf Morphoanatomy of Diploon Cronquist (Sapotaceae Juss.) Biota Neotropica
Lima,Renata Gabriela Vila Nova de; Lima,Liliane Ferreira; Ferreira,Angélica Cândida; Araújo,Josiane Silva; Zickel,Carmen Silvia.
Abstract: Diploon is a monospecific genus represented by Diploon cuspidatum, an arboreal species that has morphological characteristics distinct from those of other Sapotaceae species. In this study, Diploon cuspidatum leaves were characterized morphoanatomically in order to reveal additional diagnostic characters of their external morphology of the genus. The Diploon petiole presents shape and arrangement of the vascular system flat-convex, occasionally with one or two accessory bundles, many laticifers, and many prismatic crystals. The midrib is biconvex with a U-shaped cuticle on the abaxial side, and laticifers are associated with the vascular tissues. Mesophyll is dorsiventral, palisade parenchyma has two cell layers, T- and Y-shaped malpighiaceous...

Total leaf area of papaya trees estimated by a nondestructive method Scientia Agricola
Posse,Robson Prucoli; Sousa,Elias Fernandes de; Bernardo,Salassier; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga; Gottardo,Romildo Domingos.
Leaf area estimation is an important feature in physiological research involving predominantly photosynthesis, transpiration and growth. This study was carried out to develop a practical and nondestructive empirical mathematical model to estimate the area of one leaf and the total leaf area for papaya trees (Carica papaya L.). Two irrigated commercial orchards were evaluated over a period of 50 to 550 days after transplanting, during which the length of the leaf midrib (LM) varied from 0.04 to 0.60 m. A mathematical model was developed to estimate the area of one leaf for the papaya tree, taking into account LM and the age of the plant measured in days after transplanting. The model was considered satisfactory. Based on the average length of the last two...
